Why is wheel refurbishment so expensive?

At first glance, repairing a scratched alloy wheel can seem simple. A wheel has some damage, a technician sands it, paints it, adds lacquer, and the wheel looks good again. So why does professional wheel refurbishment often cost several hundred francs?

The answer is that high-quality wheel refurbishment is not just a quick cosmetic touch-up. It is a skilled repair process involving specialist equipment, careful preparation, paint matching, lacquer application, drying time, and responsibility for the final finish.

At Wheelwizard, we often hear the question: “Why does it cost this much?” It is a fair question. So here is an honest explanation.

1. The work takes real time

A proper wheel refurbishment is not a five-minute job. Even a single wheel can take around two hours depending on the damage, wheel design and finish. A full set of four wheels can take much of the working day.

The process can include removing the wheel from the car, cleaning, sanding, repairing kerb damage, reshaping damaged edges, preparing the surface, applying primer or paint, refinishing the face, applying lacquer, curing the finish, and refitting the wheel.

For diamond-cut wheels, the process is even more involved. The wheel face is carefully machined on a specialist lathe to restore the bright metal finish before lacquer is applied. This requires precision, experience and the right equipment.

2. The equipment is expensive

Professional wheel refurbishment requires more than basic tools. A proper mobile refurbishment van needs specialist sanding equipment, extraction, paint systems, drying lamps, jacking equipment, compressors, safety equipment, and, for diamond-cut wheels, a CNC cutting machine.

This equipment is expensive to buy, maintain and operate. It also needs regular servicing and calibration to produce reliable results.

When a technician arrives at your home or workplace, they are not simply arriving with a toolbox. They are arriving with a mobile workshop.

3. Skilled labour in Switzerland is not cheap

Switzerland is a high-cost country. Skilled labour, insurance, vehicle costs, fuel, equipment servicing, materials and business overheads are all expensive.

A good technician needs experience, patience and judgement. Every wheel is different. Some wheels have old repairs underneath. Some have corrosion. Some have deep kerb damage. Some finishes are simple; others are delicate and difficult to reproduce.

The difference between a cheap repair and a professional repair is often in the preparation, the judgement and the finish.

4. Materials matter

Paint, lacquer, primer, abrasives, cleaning products, masking materials and consumables all add cost. Good-quality lacquer is especially important because the wheel is exposed to brake dust, road salt, water, heat, cleaning chemicals and stone chips.

A wheel repair is not like painting a decorative object that stays indoors. The finish has to survive real road use.

5. Mobile service saves the customer time

With a traditional wheel repair, the customer may need to remove the wheels, transport them to a workshop, leave the car somewhere, collect the wheels later, and arrange refitting.

With a mobile service, we come to the customer’s home or workplace. The wheel is removed, repaired and refitted on-site. The customer does not need to lose time arranging transport, visiting a garage, or leaving the car away from home.

That convenience has real value.

6. Not all wheel repairs are equal

There are cheaper options on the market. Some repairs are quick touch-ups. Some are cosmetic improvements rather than proper refurbishments. Some are painted over damage without enough preparation. Some may look acceptable for a short time but fail later.

A proper refurbishment should be judged not only by the price, but by the process, the finish, the convenience and the reliability of the work.

At Wheelwizard, we aim to provide a high-quality mobile repair with a professional finish, carried out at the customer’s location, with wheel removal and refitting included.

7. There are limits to what mobile refurbishment can do

It is also important to be honest. Mobile refurbishment can produce excellent results, and we work on many high-value cars, but there are some limits compared with a full factory refurbishment.

If a wheel has heavy corrosion, previous poor repairs, severe lacquer failure, structural damage or damage on areas that cannot be properly accessed, a full workshop process such as tyre removal, stripping and powder coating may sometimes be the better option.

Our aim is always to give honest advice and avoid overpromising.

So, why is wheel refurbishment expensive?

Because when it is done properly, it involves time, skill, expensive equipment, good materials, mobile logistics, and responsibility for the final finish.

A professional wheel repair is not just about making a scratch disappear. It is about restoring the appearance of the wheel in a way that looks right, lasts as well as possible, and saves the customer time and inconvenience.

At Wheelwizard, we try to offer the best balance of quality, convenience and value. We come to your home or workplace with a fully equipped mobile workshop, repair the wheels on-site, and aim to leave your car looking smarter, cleaner and better cared for.
